Abstract

Purpose:This study was to enhance the quality of nursing students¡¯ clinical education by exploring undergraduate students¡¯ clinical practice experience in nursing colleges as they adapt to the clinical fields.

Methods:Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 22 newly graduated nurses, who have left hospitals after working less than a year at hospitals, from August 18, 2009 to October 31, 2009. The interview data were analyzed with the qualitative thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke.

Results:The four categories that the newly graduated nurses experienced during the clinical practice included practice contents, students¡¯ attitude, supporters and clinical settings. Current clinical education system mainly focuses on observation and lacks students¡¯ attitude and teaching conditions, causing newly graduated nurses to have hard times adapting to actual hospital environment. However, using teaching methods such as encouraging participation of the students and giving out positive feedbacks increased students¡¯ motivation to study.

Conclusion:The result of this study, suggested from nurses¡¯ perspective and not from the students¡¯ point of view, proposes the need to encourage nurses¡¯ participation in clinical education. In addition, it implies that satisfaction of students¡¯ clinical practice is not irrelevant to nurses¡¯ leaving hospital later.
